Overview & Origin

Standing atop the only hill in Phnom Penh at approximately 27 meters high, Wat Phnom is the city’s tallest religious monument and an important spiritual landmark.

According to local legend, a wealthy widow named Lady Penh discovered sacred Buddha statues floating along the Mekong River in the 14th century. She built an artificial hill and temple to house them, giving rise to the city’s name, Phnom Penh, meaning “Penh’s Hill.”
